THCC Rot-Gelb Renegades schlagen Heligoland Pilgrims erneut in Hamburg und behalten den ERDINGER Alkoholfrei Kontinental Cup 2014

Renegades 215 all out (Subair 63*, Arun 49, Aswin 17, Safiullah 14) schlagen die Pilgrims 121 all out (Keith 45, Mark B. 16*, Matthew 13) mit 94 Runs auf einem nassen Feld in sonst heiteren Bedingungen und behalten den ERDINGER Alkoholfrei Kontinental Cup im zweiten Jahr nacheinander. Das ist die trockene Statistik eines weiteren biergetränkten Wettkampfs zwischen THCC Rot-Gelb Renegades aus Hamburg und Heligoland Pilgrims von überall auf der Welt auf dem Hamburger Poloplatz. Wieder waren mehr als 1.000 Zuschauer gekommen, um dieses einzigartige Schauspiel zu erleben.

Die erste halbe Stunde des Spiels fand in der zentralen Showarena der British Flair Lifestyle-Veranstaltung statt. Vor dem Hintergrund eines laufenden Live-Kommentars sahen die Zuschauer folgende sportliche Höhepunkte: Pilgrims Speerspitze Gareth nahm zwei Wickets in seinen ersten beiden Overs, Pilgrims altgedienter Kapitän Mark B. nahm sogar zwei in nur einem Over, ein sicherer Fänger der Pilgrims, der unerkannt bleiben möchte, fing den sonst unzerstörbaren Renegades-Kapitän Vinay auf nur einem Run, eine umstrittene leg-before-wicket-Entscheidung zugunsten von Pilgrims Original-Vizepräsident Steve, den Widerruf eines Feldverweises, als der Ball die Stumps traf, aber die Bails nicht herunterfielen, und ein paar Boundaries von Renegades Eröffnungsspielern Kamaldin und Subair. Was will man mehr von einer Vorstellung im Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit?

Als der Seewetterbericht die Show nach fast 7 Overs unterbrach und die Spieler sich auf das nördliche Cricketfeld zurückzogen, hatten die Renegades ungefähr 5 Wickets verloren, und ihr Punktestand war wirklich keiner Erwähnung wert. Das hohe Endergebnis der Renegades nach ihren planmäßigen 20 Overs war nur möglich, weil der unentwegte Arun in Bestform war und der junge, talentierte Subair gegen die weniger souveränen Bowler der Pilgrims noch einmal schlagen durfte, und auch weil der unberechenbare bandagierte Tennisball eine Menge von Extras beitrug.

So galt es für die Pilgrims, in ihrem Innings ein hohes Ziel zu erreichen. Das wurde ihnen noch schwerer gemacht durch außergewöhnlich enges Bowling der Renegades, insbesondere von Safiullah, der einen Wicket-Maiden-Over schaffte, aber auch von Kamaladin und Aswin. Beim Stand von 53 für 7 nach 8 Overs, als Matthew als einziger Pilgrim einen nachhaltigen Eindruck auf den Punktestand hinterlassen hatte, erwarteten einige Renegades schon, daß das Spiel innerhalb weniger Bälle zu Ende sein würde. Offenbar hatten sie die Rechnung ohne die großartige südafrikanische Partnerschaft von Keith und Mark B. gemacht, die für mehr als 10 weitere Overs auf dem Platz standen und die Punktezahl der Pilgrims mehr als verdoppelten. Erst als Keith unglücklich hinter den Stumps gefangen wurde, brachten die letzten paar Overs nur noch ein paar Runs mehr ein.

Trotzdem hatten beide Mannschaften eine grandiose Cricket-Vorstellung abgeliefert, und alle Spieler verdienten ganz gewiß soviel ERDINGER Bier wie sie vertragen konnten. Aswins Mutter überreichte den Pokal an Vinay, den siegreichen Kapitän der Renegades, in strahlendem Sonnenschein. So war das Spiel am Ende des Tages nicht nur allerbeste britische Lebensart, es war auch ein Stück besonders großartiger Cricket-Unterhaltung in Hamburg, dank TCHH Rot-Gelb und, natürlich, Heligoland Pilgrims.

Kontinental Cup 2014 defeating Heligoland Pilgrims in Hamburg again

Renegades 215 all out (Subair 63*, Arun 49, Aswin 17, Safiullah 14) beat Pilgrims 121 all out (Keith 45, Mark B. 16*, Matthew 13) by 94 runs on a wet field in otherwise fair conditions and retain the ERDINGER Alkoholfrei Kontinental Cup for the second year running. These are the dry facts of another beer-infused contest between THCC Rot-Gelb Renegades from Hamburg and Heligoland Pilgrims from all over the world on the Hamburg Polo Ground. Once again, more than 1.000 visitors had come to witness the unique spectacle.

The first half hour of the match took place in the central show arena of the British Flair lifestyle event. Against the background of running live commentary, spectators saw the following sporting high lights: Pilgrims spearhead opener Gareth taking two wickets in his first two overs, Pilgrims veteran captain Mark B. even taking two in only one over, a Pilgrims sure hands wishing to remain undisclosed catching the otherwise indestructible Renegades captain Vinay on 1 run, a controversial leg before wicket-decision in favour of Pilgrims original vicepresident Steve, a revocation of a dismissal when the ball hit the stumps but the bails did not fall, and a couple of boundaries by Renegades openers Kamaldin and Subair. What more can you ask for from a centre-stage performance?

When the shipping forecast stopped the show after almost 7 overs and the players relocated to the northern cricket field, Renegades were approximately 5 wickets down and their score was not really worth mentioning. The huge total of the Renegades at the end of their allotted 20 overs was only possible because stalwart Arun was in top form, young talent Subair was allowed to bat again against the less confident Pilgrims bowlers and the wayward taped tennis ball contributed a plethora of extras.

So the Pilgrims had a mountain to climb in their innings. This was made even more difficult by some exceptionally tight Renegades bowling, notably by Safiullah who managed a wicket-maiden-over, but also by Kamaladin and Aswin. At 53 for 7 after 8 overs, with Matthew the only Pilgrim to have left a marked impression on the tally, some of the Renegades expected the match to be over within a few balls. They had apparently not reckoned with the superb South African partnership of Keith and Mark B. who stayed at the crease for more than 10 further overs and more than doubled the Pilgrims’ score. Alas, when Keith was unluckily caught behind, the last couple of overs merely yielded another couple of runs.

Still, both teams had staged a splendid cricket demonstration and all players certainly deserved as much ERDINGER beer as they could stomach. Aswin’s mother presented the Cup to Renegades’ winning captain Vinay in glorious sunshine. So at the end of the day this was not only British lifestyle at its best, it was a piece of particularly great cricket entertainment in Hamburg – courtesy of THCC Rot-Gelb and, of course, Heligoland Pilgrims.
